🇨🇦 Joseph Kun Workshop Estate Series 4/4 Violin Top Plate (Soundboard) – European Spruce (Picea abies)
We are pleased to offer a full-size 4/4 violin top plate originating from the workshop estate of Joseph Kun (Ottawa, Ontario 🇨🇦), one of Canada’s most respected 20th-century violin makers.
This piece represents authentic workshop material from the Joseph Kun estate 🇨🇦.
Description
Instrument: Violin (4/4)
Component: Two-piece top plate (soundboard)
Wood: European Spruce (Picea abies)
Construction: Bookmatched, center-joined
Working Stage: Rough arched; extra thickness remaining for final graduation
Length: Approximately 14.25 inches (≈362 mm)
The spruce displays straight, even vertical grain typical of traditional European violin tonewood, with visible medullary ray figure under light. The plate has been properly joined and roughed to arching, leaving the maker full control over graduation, bass bar fitting, and edge refinement.
Quarter-cut orientation and symmetry reflect established classical violin-making selection practices.
The reverse surface shows an area of historical varnish or ground testing, consistent with workshop experimentation and material preparation processes. This does not affect structural usability and is disclosed for full transparency.
