🇨🇦 Joseph Kun Workshop Estate
4/4 Violin Back Plate – Two-Piece Flamed Maple (Acer pseudoplatanus)
We are pleased to offer a carved violin back plate originating from the workshop estate of Joseph Kun (Ottawa, Canada 🇨🇦), one of Canada’s most respected 20th-century violin makers.
This piece represents authentic workshop material acquired from the Kun estate and preserved within the professional luthier community.
Description
Instrument: Violin (approx. 4/4)
Component: Two-piece back plate
Wood Species: European Maple (Acer pseudoplatanus)
Construction: Bookmatched, center-joined
Length: Approximately 14.50
Working Stage: Rough carved arching; edges and graduation to be completed by maker
The maple displays medium-to-strong horizontal flame with attractive visual depth across both halves. The joint is clean and structurally sound, with good quartered orientation consistent with traditional violin tonewood selection.
This plate remains at an intermediate working stage, allowing the maker freedom for final graduation, purfling channeling, and edge refinement.
Condition Disclosure
To ensure complete transparency:
• Minor irregularities are visible near the upper left arch edge and lower right arch edge areas.
• These appear to be superficial working deviations and or varnish testing typical of workshop-stage components rather than structural cracks.
• Pencil workshop markings are present.
The piece remains fully usable for a professional maker comfortable completing final corrections during graduation and edge finishing.
Provenance 🇨🇦
This component originates from the Estate of Joseph Kun.
