We are pleased to offer a full-size viola top plate originating from the workshop estate of Joseph Kun (Ottawa, Ontario 🇨🇦), one of Canada’s most respected 20th-century violin makers.
This piece represents authentic workshop material from the Joseph Kun estate 🇨🇦 and remains in an advanced early carving stage, offering exceptional potential for completion by a professional luthier.
Description
Instrument: Viola (Full Size)
Component: Two-piece top plate (soundboard)
Wood: European Spruce (Picea abies)
Construction: Bookmatched, center-joined
Working Stage: Arching largely established; edgework defined; ready for final graduation, f-hole layout, bass bar fitting, and finishing
Length: Approximately 16 inches (professional viola size range)
The spruce displays straight, even grain orientation with consistent spacing across both halves, characteristic of traditional European resonance tonewood selection. The center joint appears clean and properly executed, and the plate retains sufficient thickness for the maker to complete graduation according to their preferred tonal model.
Partially carved workshop plates of this type are often preferred by experienced makers because they preserve authentic origin while still allowing full control over final acoustic architecture.
