Joseph Kun 4/4 Violin Top Plate (Spruce) – Partially Carved
We are pleased to offer a partially carved violin top plate originating from the workshop estate of Joseph Kun (Ottawa, Ontario) — one of Canada’s most respected 20th-century violin makers.
This piece represents authentic workshop material from the Joseph Kun estate.
Description
Instrument: Violin (4/4)
Component: Top Plate (Belly)
Wood: European Spruce (Picea abies)

Cut: Quartered
Working Stage: Exterior arch roughed; edge thickness retained; purfling channel partially defined; purfling not installed

The plate shows clean center joining and well-balanced grain across both halves. The spruce displays good uniformity and clarity, suitable for professional completion and graduation. Alignment pins visible along the center line reflect traditional workshop layout practice.
This plate remains in a working stage, allowing the maker full control over final arching refinement, graduation, and tonal adjustment.
Model / Style
Classical Cremonese-inspired outline (exact template undocumented; no guarantee).
The proportions reflect traditional Italian geometry consistent with established violin making practice.
Provenance
This material originates from the Estate of Joseph Kun.
The piece was purchased at the Joseph Kun estate auction by Toronto luthier Filip Tomov and subsequently acquired directly from his workshop through established professional sourcing.
While this plate originates from the Kun estate, no claim is made that it was personally carved by Joseph Kun.
Availability
Material from the Joseph Kun workshop estate is finite. These components were acquired through careful sourcing from remaining estate stock.
Once sold, comparable pieces from this source cannot be replenished. Each offering represents a one-time opportunity.
